Melbourne Winery Proposal Guide: Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley & Beyond

Will You Marry Me proposal set up at De Bortoli winery, Yarra Valley

Why a winery proposal works

A winery does half the work for you. The views are already there, the wine is already cold and there is somewhere lovely to celebrate the second she says yes.

It also gives you the perfect cover story. "I've booked us lunch at a winery" raises zero suspicion. They gets dressed up, nails are probably done and they have no idea what is waiting around the corner.

Victoria is spoilt for choice. The Mornington Peninsula has coastal vineyard views, the Yarra Valley has rolling hills and big name cellar doors, and there are a few hidden gems much closer to Melbourne than most people realise.

We have planned hundreds of proposals across Victoria, so here is our honest guide to the best winery proposal locations, what each one suits and which ones are better kept simple with a photographer only.

Mornington Peninsula winery proposals

The Mornington Peninsula is our home turf and our favourite region for a winery proposal. You get vines, lakes and ocean all within a short drive, and Red Hill is packed with cellar doors ten minutes apart.

It is around 75 to 90 minutes from Melbourne CBD, which makes it an easy day trip or an even better overnight stay.

Montalto, Red Hill South

Montalto is our number one pick for a private winery proposal. They have secluded picnic sites scattered around the estate, so you get your own space, a beautifully set table and lunch delivered to you.

We have been setting up proposals at Montalto's picnic sites for years, and these are the three we recommend most:

  • Half Moon. The most secluded site, tucked away beside a peaceful lake. Less vineyard view, total privacy.

  • The Hide. A deck looking out over the lake, with your picnic table just nearby. Made for a proposal.

  • The Gums. Looks straight over the vineyard. More open, but still quiet.

Montalto's private picnic experience is from $165 per person, which includes a wine tasting, a three course lunch and a bottle of wine to share. Our proposal styling starts from $500, right through to our full Red or White Dream set up. See all our Montalto packages.

Best for the couple who want real privacy with incredible food and wine.

Crittenden Estate, Dromana: our exclusive winery partner

Romantic winery proposal at Crittenden Estate on the Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne, captured by a professional proposal photographer surrounded by stunning vineyard scenery.

Big news. We are now working exclusively with Crittenden Estate, which means Perfect Proposals is the team to set up your proposal here.

Crittenden is a family owned winery with some of the oldest vines on the Peninsula, wrapped around a gorgeous lake. And then there are the willow trees.

The willows sit right on the water's edge, with long branches that sweep down and create a soft green curtain around you. Tuck a luxury picnic underneath and it feels like your own secret garden. The light filters through the leaves, the lake is right there behind you and the photos are unreal.

It is honestly one of the prettiest picnic proposal spots we have ever styled.

Have the whole place to yourself. We can arrange early access before 12pm, before the winery opens up for the day. No onlookers, no one walking through your photos, just the two of you, the willows and the lake.

Celebrate straight after. Once she has said yes, wander up to the restaurant for lunch inside overlooking the water, or let us arrange private dining for something more intimate. No driving, no rushing, just a long lunch and a glass of Crittenden's best.

Stay the night. The Lakeside Villas sit right on the water, so you can turn the proposal into a full getaway.

From $300. Private hire at Crittenden starts from $300, and we will put together a styling package to suit.

Best for a private picnic proposal with a beautiful lunch to follow.

Jackalope, Merricks North

Romantic luxury proposal setup on the balcony at Jackalope Hotel, Mornington Peninsula, featuring beautiful floral styling and breathtaking winery views for an unforgettable Melbourne proposal.

Jackalope is a luxury hotel in the middle of a working vineyard, and it is one of the most romantic places on the Peninsula to propose. There are two ways to do it.

In your room. From the Lairs with huge balconies looking over the vines at sunset to the smaller spa style rooms, we pair one of our set ups with your room so she opens the door to a complete surprise. It is private, it is weatherproof and nobody is watching.

By the lake. A short stroll from the hotel and restaurant, the lake is the perfect excuse to wander the grounds and happen upon your proposal. It is tucked away, so our team can set up without being seen.

Finish with dinner at Doot Doot Doot or a tasting at the cellar door. Best for a proposal that turns into a full weekend away. Read more about Jackalope proposals.

Lancemore Lindenderry, Red Hill

Luxury winery proposal at Lindenderry Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula, featuring our Luxe Dream floral pillars, elegant romantic styling and stunning vineyard surroundings for an unforgettable Melbourne proposal.

Lindenderry feels like a little slice of Europe in the middle of Red Hill. It is a boutique hotel set on 34 acres of manicured gardens and vineyards, about an hour from Melbourne.

The lawns and gardens are the star. Picture a luxury picnic on the grass with the vines rolling away behind you, or our Luxe Dream Pillars and a custom floral arrangement framing the two of you in the garden.

Our favourite spot is the vineyard ceremony aisle, a long walkway lined with manicured cypress trees with the vines stretching out behind. Walking her down it to a set up at the end is a moment in itself.

Our tip is to time it for sunset. The light over the vines is beautiful, and you can head straight inside afterwards for dinner or a wine tasting at the cellar door. In winter there are open fireplaces to curl up next to with a glass of red.

With 40 rooms and suites on site, it is also perfect for making a night of it. Venue hire is from $500, and we organise the booking for you.

Best for an elegant, luxury proposal surrounded by gardens and vines.

Polperro, Red Hill

Polperro's vineyard villas are gorgeous for an in room proposal. We style the villa while you are out, and she walks back in to flowers, candles and champagne.

Our favourite Peninsula combo

Here is a tip most people don't think of. If your favourite winery doesn't allow a styled set up, we set up your proposal at one of our Peninsula locations, like our Sorrento clifftop, then you head to your winery lunch to celebrate.

You get the luxury set up, the ocean backdrop and the long lunch with a glass of pinot, all in one day.

Yarra Valley winery proposals

The Yarra Valley is the classic choice. Think rolling green hills, rows of vines to the horizon and some of the best known cellar doors in the country.

It is around an hour from Melbourne CBD, so it works beautifully as a day trip with a winery lunch booked for afterwards.

De Bortoli Yarra Valley Estate, Dixons Creek

Romantic winery proposal at De Bortoli Wines in the Yarra Valley, Melbourne, featuring an elegant luxury proposal setup surrounded by picturesque vineyards and breathtaking countryside views.

De Bortoli is our go to Yarra Valley location. The gardens are gorgeous, the vineyard views are exactly what you picture when you think of a winery proposal, and there is an Italian restaurant on site for lunch.

De Bortoli's picnic booking is from $150 with the picnic included. Our proposal packages start from $800 for a luxury picnic for two with sparkling, wine, a cheese platter, roses and Marry Me letters, right through to our full Red or White Dream set up. See all our De Bortoli packages.

One honest note. It is a working winery that is open to the public, so we can never promise complete privacy. Our tip is to arrive around 11am when it is usually at its quietest.

Coombe Yarra Valley, Coldstream

Romantic Floral Halo proposal setup at Coombe Yarra Valley, Melbourne, featuring a stunning floral arch and elegant styling surrounded by beautiful winery gardens for an unforgettable marriage proposal.

Coombe is the former home of opera star Dame Nellie Melba, with seven acres of historic gardens and more than 115 years of history. We are proud to be partnered with Coombe for proposals.

Our two favourite spots are the Oak Tree, believed to be over 180 years old, and the Italian Garden with its manicured hedges. Exclusive garden hire comes with a bottle of their Blanc de Blancs served at your proposal spot.

Our Coombe packages start from $1,250 including venue hire, and you can add a three course lunch with estate wines to celebrate. See all our Coombe packages.

Best for a private garden proposal with a real sense of occasion.

TarraWarra Estate, Yarra Glen

Romantic winery proposal at TarraWarra Estate in Melbourne’s Yarra Valley, featuring elegant proposal styling surrounded by rolling vineyards, breathtaking countryside views and a stunning luxury winery setting.

TarraWarra is one for the art lovers. We set up on a little patio overlooking the lake and the vines, which feels tucked away from the rest of the estate.

Afterwards, explore the gallery and the grounds for photos. Just be aware that a lot of the artwork can't be photographed, so your photographer will guide you to the spots that can.

From $500. Best for couples who love art, architecture and a slower pace.

Fergusson Winery, Dixons Creek

Fergusson is a hidden gem. The restaurant looks out over the vineyard through floor to ceiling windows, with an open fire in winter.

The grounds are the real surprise. There is a sandstone gazebo, a little chapel in a secluded garden, a pond with a bridge and wisteria covered walkways.

The venue fee is $400, which includes a bottle of sparkling to pop the second she says yes.

Best for a tucked away garden proposal that still feels like a winery.

Balgownie Estate, Yarra Glen

Balgownie is a vineyard resort with a day spa, a restaurant and a deck that looks out over the vines. It is our pick in the Yarra Valley for an in room proposal.

Book a suite with a private balcony, head off for a spa treatment or a tasting, and we will have the room styled for when you walk back in.

Best for a private, weatherproof proposal and a night away.

Riverlea Estate, Warrandyte

Riverlea Estate sits at the gateway to the Yarra Valley, so you get the vineyard setting without the full drive out. It is the closest of our Yarra Valley options to Melbourne.

The estate has its own vines, landscaped garden spaces, a cellar door and a restaurant on site. That means you can propose in the gardens and walk straight to lunch.

Best for a winery proposal close to the city, especially if you are in the eastern suburbs.

Marnong Estate: the winery proposal close to Melbourne

Marnong Estate in Mickleham is the answer if you want a winery proposal without the long drive. It is only 35 minutes from Melbourne CBD and 15 minutes from the airport.

The estate has panoramic views across to the Macedon Ranges, a restored 1840s homestead and Victorian gardens. Golden hour here is something special.

You can also stay the night in the homestead, so it works really well for a proposal followed by dinner and a sleepover with zero driving.

Best for northern suburbs locals, anyone short on time and visitors flying in to Melbourne who want to propose somewhere beautiful without hiring a car for the day.

Other Victorian wineries worth a look

The Bellarine Peninsula is the underrated one. It sits across the bay from the Mornington Peninsula, around 90 minutes from Melbourne, and it is usually a lot quieter.

Jack Rabbit Vineyard, Bellarine

Jack Rabbit has one of the best winery views in Victoria. You look straight across the bay to Geelong, the You Yangs and Melbourne in the distance.

There is a restaurant with floor to ceiling windows, so the view follows you to lunch.

Terindah Estate, Bellarine

Terindah is right next door to Jack Rabbit and the name means "most beautiful" in Indonesian. Fair call.

You can wander through the vines and fig trees with the bay behind you. Best for a quiet, low key proposal with a stunning backdrop.

Wineries that are best for photos only

Not every winery proposal needs a full set up. Some wineries are so beautiful on their own that all you need is the ring, the view and someone hiding nearby with a camera.

A photographer only proposal is also the smart choice at venues that don't allow outside styling, or if she would prefer something low key over a big production.

How it works

  1. You book your lunch, tasting or picnic at the winery as normal.

  2. We lock in a time and an exact spot with you, and check photography is fine with the venue.

  3. Our photographer arrives early and blends in like any other visitor.

  4. You walk her to the spot, drop to one knee and every second is captured.

  5. You get a 30 minute shoot around the vines while the adrenaline is still pumping.

  • Crittenden Estate, Mornington Peninsula. Willow trees on the lake, with early access before 12pm.

How to plan a winery proposal

Pick your region first

  • Yarra Valley. About an hour. Best for the classic vineyard look and a long lunch.

  • Mornington Peninsula. About 75 to 90 minutes. Best for vines and ocean together, plus a night away.

  • Marnong Estate, Mickleham. About 35 minutes from Melbourne CBD. Best if you are short on time, flying in or based in the north.

  • Bellarine Peninsula. About 90 minutes. Best for bay views and fewer crowds.

Always ask the winery first

Wineries are private property and most have rules around styling, signage and professional photography. Turning up with a set up and hoping for the best is the fastest way to ruin the day.

When you book with us, we handle the venue conversation for you.

Time it right

Mid morning on a weekday is the quietest time at almost every cellar door. Weekends from midday onwards are the busiest.

If photos matter most, the hour before sunset gives you the softest light on the vines. Just check the closing time, as many cellar doors shut by 5pm.

Have a wet weather plan

Victoria does what it wants. Pick a winery with an undercover or indoor option, or let us organise a backup location like Ashcombe Maze so the proposal goes ahead rain, hail or shine.

Book the lunch for after, not before

Propose first, then eat. You will actually enjoy your meal instead of sweating through three courses with a ring box in your pocket.

Keep your cover story simple

"I've booked us a winery lunch" is all you need. It explains the drive, the nice outfit and the camera on the table.

Winery proposal FAQs

Can I propose at any winery?

You can pop the question almost anywhere, but a styled set up or a professional photographer usually needs the venue's approval first. We organise that for you.

How much does a winery proposal cost?

A photographer only proposal is $550. For a styled proposal, venue fees start from $150 and our styling from $500, depending on the winery. You can add a photographer to any styled package for $450.

Will it be private?

Wineries are open to the public, so we never promise total privacy. We choose the quietest spot and the quietest time of day so the moment feels like it is just the two of you. Some options have out of hours exclusive access

What is the best time of year for a winery proposal?

Autumn is our favourite, when the vines turn gold and red. Spring and summer are green and lush. Winter vines are bare, so we lean on the views, the fireplaces and a cosy long lunch.

How far ahead should I book?

Two to four weeks is ideal, especially for weekends. If you have left it late, still get in touch. We reply fast and we have pulled off plenty of last minute proposals.

What if it rains?

We always have a backup plan, whether that is an undercover area at the venue or a nearby wet weather location.

Ready to plan your winery proposal?

Tell us the date, the region you are thinking and a little about her. We will come back to you quickly with the best winery options and a plan that takes all the stress off your plate.

All you have to do is turn up and ask the question.
