5 Common Proposal Mistakes to Avoid

Planning a surprise proposal?

It does not need to be over the top, but there are a few details worth getting right. The moment happens once, and a little planning will help everything feel more personal, relaxed and memorable.

From making the proposal personal to organising photography and planning what happens after the “yes,” here are five common proposal mistakes to avoid.

1. Forgetting to make the proposal personal

It is easy to find a beautiful proposal online and decide to recreate it exactly.

There is nothing wrong with using Instagram or Pinterest for inspiration, but the final idea should still feel like your relationship.

Before choosing the location or styling, think about what your partner would genuinely love.

Would they want something private or would they enjoy having family and friends nearby? Would they prefer a beach, hotel, restaurant or private venue? Would they love a complete floral setup or something simple and intimate?

You can also include personal details such as:

  • Their favourite flowers or colours

  • A meaningful location

  • A particular song

  • Photographs from your relationship

  • A handwritten letter

  • Their favourite champagne or drink

The proposal does not need to be the biggest. It just needs to feel like them.

2. Not organising proposal photography or videography

The proposal itself can be over within a few minutes, and the reaction cannot be recreated afterwards.

Booking a proposal photographer and/or videographer means the surprise, the reaction, and the moments that follow can all be captured properly.

Trust us, you won’t regret booking this one!

3. Rushing through the moment

You will probably be nervous, and that is completely normal.

However, nerves can make people walk too quickly, rush through what they want to say and move straight on after their partner says yes.

Slow down, take a breath.

When you reach the proposal spot, focus on your partner. Give yourself time to say what you planned before asking the question.

After the “yes,” stay in the moment. Let yourselves react, celebrate and take everything in.

You do not need to immediately look towards the photographer or worry about what happens next. Those natural reactions are often the best part.

4. Completely winging what you want to say

You do not need to memorise a long speech, but it helps to have a general idea of what you want to say.

Think about why you want to marry your partner, what you love most about them and what you are looking forward to in your future together.

Write down a few key points and read over them before the proposal.

It should still sound natural and like you. Having a few thoughts prepared simply makes it less likely that the nerves will take over and leave you with nothing to say.

5. Forgetting to plan what happens afterwards

The proposal should not feel as though it ends as soon as the ring is on.

Book dinner or a hotel stay, arrange a bottle of champagne, invite family and friends to join you or plan some quiet time together.

What happens afterwards does not need to be elaborate. It just helps to have something organised so you can continue enjoying the moment instead of wondering what to do next.

If your partner would prefer to celebrate privately, leave some time to enjoy the moment together before sharing the news.

The proposal may be the main event, but what you do afterwards can turn it into a complete experience.
